What is TURP Surgery?

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure used to treat urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate. It helps men who are unable to pass urine properly due to blockage in the urinary tract. The surgery removes excess prostate tissue using instruments inserted through the natural urinary passage.

Advanced Endoscopic Technique for Prostate Tissue Removal:

TURP is carried out by inserting a resectoscope through the urethra, allowing direct access to the prostate without any external incision. The instrument contains a camera system and a working element fitted with an electrically activated loop that cuts and coagulates tissue simultaneously. Continuous irrigation using sterile fluid maintains clear visibility and helps remove resected tissue fragments during the procedure. The surgeon carefully trims the obstructing prostate tissue layer by layer to restore a normal urinary channel. Hemostasis is achieved using electrocautery to control bleeding throughout the surgery. At the end of the procedure, a Foley catheter is placed to support bladder drainage and assist in post-operative healing.

Why it’s done?

  • Severe urinary obstruction due to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
  • Acute or chronic urinary retention requiring catheter dependence
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections caused by incomplete bladder emptying
  • Presence of bladder stones or damage due to long-term obstruction
  • Failure of medical (drug-based) treatment to relieve symptoms
