Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Implantation Introduction
An Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) is a small device placed inside the chest to monitor and correct dangerous heart rhythms. It automatically sends electrical shocks to restore a normal heartbeat when it detects a life-threatening arrhythmia. This device helps prevent sudden cardiac arrest in people at high risk.
Life-Saving ICD Implantation Procedure in Cardiology
During ICD implantation, a small incision is made near the collarbone, and the device is inserted under the skin. One or more leads (thin wires) are guided through the veins into the heart and connected to the ICD. The device is programmed to continuously monitor the heart’s electrical activity. If an abnormal rhythm is detected, it delivers a controlled shock to restore a normal rhythm. The procedure is done under local anesthesia and guided by fluoroscopy (a type of real-time X-ray). It usually takes about 1 to 2 hours and helps protect patients from sudden cardiac death.
Why it’s done?
- To prevent sudden cardiac arrest caused by ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia.
- For patients with a history of heart attack and significantly weakened heart muscle.
- In individuals with inherited heart rhythm disorders like Long QT Syndrome or Brugada Syndrome.
- For patients who have survived a previous cardiac arrest and are at risk of recurrence.
