Overview of Optical Internal Urethrotomy (OIU / DVIU)
Optical Internal Urethrotomy, also known as DVIU, is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat urethral stricture. It involves cutting the narrowed segment of the urethra under direct vision. This procedure helps restore normal urine flow.
Endoscopic Incision Technique for Urethral Stricture Treatment
OIU is performed under spinal or general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. A urethrotome is inserted through the urethra to reach the narrowed segment. The stricture is clearly visualized using an endoscopic camera system. A cold knife or laser is used to make a precise incision at the stricture site. This incision widens the urethral passage to improve urine flow. A catheter is usually placed temporarily to support healing after the procedure.
