What is Endoscopic Ultrasound?
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the digestive tract and nearby organs. It combines endoscopy with ultrasound to produce detailed images from inside the body. Doctors use EUS to diagnose conditions and sometimes guide treatments in the gastrointestinal (GI) area.
Understanding the EUS Procedure
During an EUS procedure, a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope is passed through the mouth and into the digestive tract. This endoscope has a small ultrasound probe at its tip, which sends out sound waves to create images of the internal organs. The procedure helps doctors see layers of the gastrointestinal wall, lymph nodes, and surrounding organs such as the pancreas and liver. EUS can also be used to take tissue samples using fine-needle aspiration (FNA). Sedation is typically given to keep the patient comfortable. The high-resolution images obtained during EUS help detect abnormalities that are not visible with other imaging methods.
Indications for Endoscopic Ultrasound
- To diagnose and stage cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, and rectum.
- To evaluate pancreatic diseases like cysts, tumors, or chronic pancreatitis.
- To assess unexplained abdominal pain or weight loss.
- To guide fine-needle biopsies for accurate tissue sampling.
